Jeff has put together my dream marking knife that hits all the criteria I was looking for.
The blade is thick enough to withstand heavy marking, but thin enough to fit into tight kerfs in dovetails. It fits easily into an apron pocket, with a magnetic sheath so you don't pay a blood sacrifice to the woodworking gods. Easy to sharpen with Jeff's honing guide as well.
Perhaps most importantly, the dumb thing doesn't roll off your workbench onto the concrete 15 minutes into the start of an intensive 7 day woodworking class.
I had the idea to make a second, slightly longer, magnetic sheath that was drilled for a lanyard hole so that I could tether it to my apron. I've swept two leather sheaths off my bench into the trash before... never again. Jeff called me, liked the idea, and made it happen. Not to brag, but the idea works brilliantly and I'm a genius.
The only issue? I'm pretty sure I need a blackwood panel gauge to match it.
Absolutely a beautiful piece of wood and metal working. Destined to be an heirloom.
